What a view with Monticello at the end of the basin. President Jefferson deserved this majestic monument for the revolutionary ideas reflected in the Declaration of Independence at a time when monarchy was the norm as a form of government. In addition, he broke away with tradition where status was based on bloodline to be replaced with status based on merit and virtue. We now take this for granted but in those days that was a very revolutionary idea that later spread to other countries.

I'm really impressed how well this farm was personally run by Mr. Washington to the most minute detail. He turned it almost into a self sufficient community that at the time of his death, it was virtually debt free. Unfortunately this was at the cost of the labor of the slaves, and fortunately he made provisions to set them free and care for the young and the elderly after his death. He realized over time that this was an immoral institution incompatible with the ideals of the new republic.

My great-great grand father, George L. Washington (related to the first President) purchased this land from his sister in law. Three generations of my ancestors including my grandfather and grand aunt remember living there I'm not sure for how long. There use to be a house that burned down that is no longer there. Since there were no roads, my grand aunt told me that they had to take a boat up the Matanzas river into St. Augustine to purchase food and clothing.

George Lawrence Washington, his eldest son and my great grandfather, possibly died there since his orbituary appeared in a St. Augustine newspaper. After the civil war he went to Cuba to visit General Walker, met and married my Cuban great grandmother and lived there for several years. He later became involved in some business enterprises and was later appointed to serve both as Vice Consul and interim General Consul of the Unites States of America in Cuba. He left with his family when the war of independance from Spain started and died shortly after he left Cuba.

Washington's Birthday Observed

While the gun salute when passing Mount Vernon was discontinued some time before specific honors to Washington's tomb were prescribed, the memory of our first president is honored in accordance with Navy regulations by a 21-gun salute fired at noon on each twenty-second day of February by all vessels and naval stations equipped with saluting batteries. This regulation has come down intact from 1818 except for one change in 1865 of the number of guns required since 1818 (it was a 17-gun salute then). The Regulations for the Navy of the Confederate States called for similar honors on Washington's birthday:

"Salutes on the 22nd of February, &c. On the anniversary of the declaration of independence of the Confederate States, and on the twenty-second day of February, the anniversary of the birth of Washington, a salute of twenty-one guns shall be fired at meridian from vessels in commission and navy yards." (Art. 25)

There is an instance on record when Union warships lying off the Confederate-held fort at Pensacola, Florida, joined with the fort at the firing of a salute. During the Civil War, Mount Vernon was by spontaneous consent of those on both sides of the great contest neutral ground. Soldiers were requested to leave their arms outside the gates, which they did, and men in blue and grey met fraternally before the tomb of the Father of their divided country.
